Core Paths

Under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, every local authority must develop a Core Path Plan. This plan ensures that the public has reasonable access through and across the landscape via a well‑connected network of routes.

In East Ayrshire, core paths:
Link towns, villages, communities and key destinations
Support everyday journeys such as travelling to work or visiting friends
Provide opportunities for leisure, health and wellbeing
Contribute to sustainable travel and tourism
Help visitors and residents explore East Ayrshire’s natural beauty

Core paths are selected for their strategic value—not for how busy they are or the physical standard of the route. Their importance lies in where they go and how they connect people and places.

Who Can Use Core Paths?

Most core paths in Scotland are designed for shared use, meaning they are typically suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Some routes may be less accessible due to natural terrain or proximity to livestock, but the network as a whole aims to provide inclusive, practical access across the area.
In addition to land‑based routes, East Ayrshire also includes water‑based core paths, offering opportunities for kayaking, canoeing and other non motorised water activities

How Core Paths Are Chosen

A core path is selected based on:
Its location
Its connectivity to communities and destinations
Its value to residents, visitors and landowners
Its contribution to an integrated access network
These routes form the backbone of East Ayrshire’s wider network of local paths, trails and recreational routes.
