The River Ayr Way
The River Ayr Way is Scotland’s first official source‑to‑sea long‑distance path, stretching 44 miles from Glenbuck Loch to the Ayr coastline. Opened in 2006 by broadcaster Fred Macaulay, it remains one of the country’s most accessible and rewarding walking routes — perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and short‑break visitors exploring Ayrshire.
A Stunning 44‑Mile Journey Through Ayrshire
Following the winding path of the River Ayr, this scenic trail runs through one of the most fascinating river valleys in Southern Scotland. Unlike many longer routes, the River Ayr Way can comfortably be completed over a long weekend, making it ideal for weekend walkers, day -trip explorers, short break visitors and nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Your journey begins at historic Glenbuck Loch, where convenient parking is available at Glenbuck Heritage Park.
Rich History Along the River Ayr
The route is steeped in Ayrshire’s heritage and features links to iconic Scottish figures, including our national bard, Robert Burns, William Wallace, John Loudoun Macadam and influential Covenanters who shaped Scotland’s religious history.
Walkers can enjoy a blend of cultural landmarks, natural landscapes, and historic sites that tell the story of Ayrshire across centuries.
Wildlife & Nature Highlights
The River Ayr Way offers an impressive range of habitats, giving visitors regular opportunities to spot local wildlife including otters, badgers, herons, hen harriers as well as a wide variety of river, woodland and moorland birds.

**Please note the new end point of the Challenge indicated in the map below

** Please note that due to numerous landslides in the Wellflat Bank area of the River Ayr Way, this section of the route is closed as the path has become unstable and dangerous. In the interest of safety, visitors should not attempt to use it. A temporary diversion, via Daldorch, has been put in place whilst a permanent alternative route is negotiated.
