Baird Institute

Located in the heart of Cumnock, The Baird Institute is one of East Ayrshire’s most significant cultural and community venues. First opened in 1891, the building was created as a gift to the people of the town, offering a welcoming space for learning, leisure and local connection — a purpose it proudly continues to fulfil today.

Visitors can explore an exceptional collection of world‑important Mauchline Ware, alongside rare examples of Cumnock Pottery and a rich selection of materials celebrating the history of Cumnock and the Doon Valley. The museum’s collections include historic photographs, archives, books, maps, newspapers and audio visual materials which provide a fascinating insight into the area’s heritage. A dedicated room highlights the life of the Labour Party's founder James Keir Hardie,  with many of his personal belongings on display.

Throughout the year, The Baird presents a vibrant programme of contemporary art exhibitions – featuring international names such as Picasso and Matisse alongside talented local artists. The venue also hosts a wide variety of community workshops and heritage‑focused events, making it a lively destination for both visitors and local residents. Whether you’re drawn to local history, Scottish craftsmanship or creative arts, there's always something new to discover.

Designed by Robert Ingram and constructed in striking Scottish Baronial style using distinctive pink sandstone from Mauchline and Auchinleck, the building is an architectural landmark in its own right.

School groups, community groups and visitors from near or far are welcome by appointment — and admission is free.
